Middle-out compression on every plan

The middle-out engine now runs on every Pied Piper plan, including free. Compression jobs that used to take minutes finish in seconds, and files never leave the device unencrypted. Anything already in your library recompresses in the background the next time the app is idle, so there is nothing to migrate and nothing to re-upload. Ratios improve most on mixed archives with video and raw image data. Turn it off per folder in Settings if you need byte-identical output for an existing pipeline.

Improvements

  • Compression ratios improve by 18 percent on mixed media archives
  • Background recompression runs only when the app is idle
  • Per-folder compression settings carry over to nested subfolders
  • The compression queue survives app restarts without losing position
  • Archive previews render before compression finishes

Fixes

  • Nested symlinks no longer duplicate files inside the archive
  • Unicode filenames survive round trips on Windows
  • Cancelling a job releases its memory immediately
  • Password-protected archives open without a second prompt
  • The status bar no longer reports negative time remaining

Faster uploads to HooliDrive

Syncing a compressed archive to HooliDrive is about three times faster. Large folders upload in the background while you keep working, and interrupted transfers resume from the exact chunk that failed instead of starting over.

Middle-out compression now runs on every Pied Piper plan, including free.

Compression used to be the tier you upgraded for. That never sat right. The work happens on device, the cost curve does not justify a paywall, and the people who need fast compression most are usually the ones on the smallest plan.

So it ships to everyone.

What changes in practice: jobs that took minutes finish in seconds. Files never leave the device unencrypted. Archives already in your library recompress in the background the next time the app sits idle, so there is no migration and no re-upload.

Ratios improve most on mixed archives with video and raw image data, around 18 percent in our testing.

Teams running byte-identical pipelines can turn compression off per folder in Settings.
